Sanibel Island is located approximately 30 miles from the Ft. Myers airport, on the Southwest gulf coast of Florida. The tropical island is boomerang shaped - 11miles long and 2 miles wide. 

The island is known for its breathtaking sunsets, shelling, committment to wildlife and pure natural beauty.  Islanders boast that there isn't a single stop light on the island, and no high rises.  The restuarants are first class and the wildlife activities for kids are numerous.

Sanibel Island is a perfect place for a relaxing vacation, and often appears in the Conde Naste survey of top vacation spots in the world.

The City of Sanibel incorporated in 1974
to protect itself from the commercial developement with the Comprehensive Land Use Plan.  It is one of the most stringent land use plans in the USA and
has served as  a model for other small communities throughout the country. 

About 50% of the island is the "Ding Darling" National Wildlife Refuge named after J. Ding Darling an ecologically oriented cartoonist who back in the 20's, was ahead of his time in being concerned about the ecology of this country.  Visitors come from around the world.  Stop by the chamber of commerce as you come across the causeway for more information.
